FINE MOTOR SKILLS

Did you know there are over 25 muscles in the hand and forearm? These muscles help to control our movements to pick up objects, fasten our clothing, hold different items in our hands and complete every day activities. Fine motor skills allow us to coordinate our small muscles and perform various tasks.

Children with decreased fine motor skills may demonstrate difficulty with the following activities:

  • Using scissors

  • Opening snack containers

  • Picking up small items using one hand

  • Holding a crayon, marker, pencil, or paintbrush

  • Manipulating fasteners such as buttons and zippers
