Sag Harbor Pre-K students dig into Groundhog Day

Students in Mrs. Romeo’s prekindergarten classroom at the Sag Harbor Learning Center recently celebrated Groundhog Day with an engaging, education-focused exploration of animal hibernation. The lesson centered on groundhogs and other animals that hibernate, helping young learners understand seasonal changes through music, creativity and hands-on activities.
As part of the experience, students learned a song, created groundhog masks and worked together to construct a groundhog’s burrow, bringing science concepts to life through play and collaboration. The class also took part in the beloved Groundhog Day tradition, eagerly watching to see whether Punxsutawney Phil would spot his shadow.
When Phil saw his shadow and returned to his burrow to hibernate, students learned that winter would continue for six more weeks. The activity sparked curiosity, conversation and excitement while reinforcing early science skills, observation and seasonal awareness.
