Sag Harbor first graders investigate the science of light

First grade students at Sag Harbor Elementary School are engaging in an immersive science unit on light and sound under the guidance of their science teacher, Adrian Drake. During the light unit, students explored diverse light sources – from the sun and stars to electric lights and bioluminescent organisms – while investigating how light interacts with transparent, translucent and opaque materials through reflection.
Recent lessons focused on refraction, with students conducting experiments to observe how light bends through water and prisms, revealing the seven colors of the spectrum and their relationships. These hands-on activities help students understand fundamental properties of light in a dynamic and engaging way. In future lessons, the class will center its focus on the science of sound.
